Association
For Spinal Injury Research Rehabilitation and Reintegration
ASPIRE
works with people with spinal cord injury to create
opportunity, choice and independence for disabled
people in society.
ASPIRE was founded in 1983, in response to the concerns
of doctors at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital,
Stanmore Middlesex.
People with spinal cord injuries were observed to
be living longer but that there was little or no
help and assistance for their rehabilitation back
into society.
From humble beginnings the charity grew, until in
1998, following a successful National Lottery bid,
the charitys headquarters were re-developed
to provide what is now known as the ASPIRE National
Training Centre (ANTC).
Today,
these flagship headquarters flourish as a center
of excellence that is unique in Europe, where disabled
and non-disabled people can integrate in sports
and leisure activities. CANDO II, the integrated
youth dance group and part of the CandoCo Dance
Company, rehearse in the purpose built studio and
rehearsal space at the ANTC.
The activities of ASPIRE reach out nationwide. Our
work includes purchasing specialist equipment for
individuals who are paralysed; creating personal
development training courses, short term housing;
research into technology to benefit people with
disabilities and promoting integration between disabled
and non-disabled people through sport.
