JOHN O'GROATS TO LANDS END IN 40 HOURS!

29th October to 31st October 2004

Started: 6.02.53am at 0.47 miles NW of John O'Groats 30th Oct 04

Finished: 20.29.03pm at 0.7mileW or Lands End 31st Oct 04

Members of the Metropolitan and City of London Police who make up the BikeSafe-London Team are riding a 50cc moped non-stop from John O’Groats to Lands End via London during the weekend of 29th to 31st October 2004. The distance is approximately 1000 miles and working on an average speed of 25mph, that means at least 40 hours continuous riding.

We have chosen two worthy charities to support. The Isabel Hospice, a charity providing care for patients and their families living with cancer and other serious illnesses. Also the Association for Spinal Injury Research, Rehabilitation and Reintegration who work with people with spinal cord injuries. 1200 people are injured each year 10.6% involve riders of motorcycles.

We have chosen the following worthy charities to support.

Isabel HospiceIsabel Hospice

This is a charity providing care for patients and their families living with cancer and other serious illnesses. The Hospice provides a home care team, a Day Hospice for up to 60 patients a week, a Family Support service, a 16 bed In-patient Hospice and a Bereavement Service. A fully trained team of volunteers supports the specialist medical staff in providing a warm, caring environment for patients and their families. In addition, Community Nurse Specialists, formerly known as MacMillan nurses, are available from the outset to advise and care for patients and their families. Their services are provided free and are always in need of additional funds. We have a particular desire to help this charity as a member of the team has been helped considerably by the hospice in the past. This event will, in turn, help raise the awareness of the work carried out by hospices across the country.

This is the Honda X8 moped ready for our 40 hour Team Challenge.

Kindly Supplied By Honda Chiswick.

The moped will be auctioned at the end of the ride to raise further funds for our nominated charities.

Aspire

Association for Spinal Injury Research, Rehabilitation and Reintegration

ASPIRE works with people with spinal cord injuries to create opportunity, choice and independence. There are more than 40,000 people in Britain with spinal cord injuries. 1200 people are injured each year - more than 3 every day. 36.8% of injuries are following road traffic accidents and 10.6% involve riders of motorcycles. The ASPIRE National Training Centre is committed to full integration between disabled and able-bodied people through sport and dance, financial, information technology and career training assistance. To promote autonomy, assist with housing and a Male Fertility Research Project. Inpatients at the RNOH are welcome to use the facilities of the ASPIRE National Training Centre free of charge. The event would directly raise money for victims of motorcycle injuries and assist ASPIRE to rebuild their lives.

I am respectfully asking for your support in this event in any way you see fit. Predominantly we would prefer you to pledge money to us for these charities or if this is not possible, perhaps you can help by offering a significant and attractive prize for the proposed post event Dinner and Dance on 19th March 2005 at the Metropolitan Police Sports and Social Club, Chigwell, Essex, where there will be a raffle or auction and we will hand over the money raised to the charities.

It is proposed to inform all of the motorcycling press, local papers, radio and television media to publicise this event both before we set off and as it progresses through the country. We would be happy to include your company’s name and logo in any literature and on the moped showing you as supporters of this worthy cause.

Please feel free to contact one of the team on 020 8733 4679 to discuss your involvement in this challenging event.
