Frequent Types of P2W Collisions

  • Other vehicle turns right across the pass of P2W - about half of all KSIs
  • P2W loses control - 11% of KSIs
  • Head on collision - 6% of KSIs
  • 1 in 5 between 7am and 10am
  • 1 in 5 in the wet
  • Nearly 1 in 3 in dark
  • Oil and Diesel

KSI = Killed or Seriously Injured
P2W = Powered Two Wheelers

PTWs make up less than 2% of vehicluar traffic in London, but account for 24% of all fatalities and 18% of killed and seriously injured combined.

Much of the casualty increase in 2001 can be explained by increased ownership

BikeSafe-London began in 2003 and it would be encouraging to think that the success of our scheme has contributed to the falling number of KSIs and Slight Casualties since that time.

Statistics show:

  • Motorcycles are the highest risk mode of transport
  • London P2W casualty rates per resident are higher than the GB as a whole
  • There is a casualty spike of young riders of low powered bikes and mopeds and older riders are injured on more powerful bikes
  • Men make up around 90% of casualties but relatively more women are injured in the 20 - 30 age group.
